For those who like a stiff drink to those who like the the old-fashioned atmosphere, the cocktail scene across the country is booming right now. We set our sights in this issue on the West Coast where mixologists and drinkers share a passion for the hand-crafted spirits. We begin in Portland and end in San Diego. This, in the words of our writer, was a good assignment.
The Spare Room
The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
7000 Hollywood Blvd / Los Angeles, CA
What’s better than playing a bunch of games while having a few outstanding cocktails? We think, not much! This is one of the many reasons that Spare Room, the brainchild of Marc Rose and Med Abrous, stands to be one of the best destination cocktail bars in Los Angeles. The aesthetic is patterned after the private gaming parlors found in the 1920’s homes of the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers. The Spare Room is composed of a two-lane bowling alley overlooking Hollywood Boulevard, gaming tables with classics like Dominos and Connect Four, as well as a hidden photo booth to capture all those spontaneous moments. Punch bowls can also be ordered for the tables for a true party vibe.
Cocktails: Under direction of Naomi Schimek, Director of Beverage, Spare Room has done a great job of recreating historic Hollywood cocktails with a modern twist. The menu is full of fresh farmer’s market ingredients and it’s definitely spirit driven with a focus on the classics. For an extra, unique experience, ask for the house-made liqueur menu.
Spare Room = FUN
Not only are ALL the bartenders amazing at mixing cocktails and crafting one of a kind dealer’s choice creations to fit your palate, they are probably having more fun than you are while doing it! The lovely ladies to order drinks from are Naomi (Director of the show), The Lovely Lady Di , Lauren (Kentucky) and Ann Marie (the newest addition). This isn’t to say that Marc and Ryan won’t mix you up one serious cocktail. You can’t miss with this bar staff.
“You learn about the people you’re with very fast when playing a game against them”
