With sun-kissed locks, a slender build and highly infectious energy, Erica Hosseini is the quintessential Southern California surfer girl. Her joie de vivre translates even over the telephone, as I catch up with the professional surfer before she jets off to a competition in Europe.
It’s hard to believe the Newport Beach native is only twenty-four years old. Hosseini began surfing at the age of thirteen, and has already secured winning spots in several major competitions, including Volcom Championships, US Championships and the NSSA National Open Women’s Title, which she won in 2003 alongside the Governor’s Cup. She has proudly travelled to six out of seven continents, having surfed the swell and sands of Australia, Japan, Hawaii, Indonesia, Canada, Costa Rica, Brazil, Argentina, Bali, and Nicaragua.
“There’s down time during contests either when there aren’t waves or it’s raining, so there’s opportunity to make a lot of close friends that you eventually end up travelling with,” says Hosseini.
Having competed since her teens, Hosseini has become a driving presence in the surfing community, already having racked up an impressive list of sponsors, including Jose Cuervo, Baby G Watches, Sector 9 Skateboards, BodyGlove, Jack’s Surf Shop, Flip Flop Shop, SharpEye and Filtrate Eyewear. While some athletes or actors adopt a persona for the public eye, Hosseini’s genial demeanor is a genuine aspect of her personality. “I’m the same person in and out of the water,” Hosseini says. Come competition time, however, all is fair out in the lineup. “When I have that jersey on, the competitive edge takes the lead and it doesn’t necessarily matter who I’m up against since I’m there to win,” Hosseini says.
It’s that determined and subtly aggressive attitude that has led Hosseini to success both on and off the beach. Aside from her successful professional surfing career, the vivacious blonde also has a hit segment on GrindTV and maintains her own website(www.ericahosseini.com). Just recently, she launched a blog, whereserica.com, which documents her globetrotting adventures, and thereby making her more accessible to her many fans. “The blog started off as a hobby so I could share the behind-the-scenes details of my photo shoots, tours, competing life and other fun stuff I get into,” Hosseini says.
With several exciting projects already under her board, including a cameo on the hit show 90210 and various modeling gigs, Hosseini looks forward to the future.
